AThere are two types of dancing - the Latin Ballroom (cha-cha, rumba, samba, jive, paso-doble), you mostly learn these together, or the original and derived dances - Samba de Brasil, Cuban Salsa, LA Salsa, Mambo (Salsa on2).The understanding of the differences comes with the amount of knowledge you gain.Depends on what music you wanna dance to.If you never done any partner dancing or step-based dancing before, I suggest to start with an easy one, which I would consider salsa (level 1 dance). Salsa gives you lots of space to express yourself and it's better to do, if you're a confident type of person. Bachata is a good choice as well, little slower, still latin - lots of hip movement.Other choice could be swing, very energetic, again depends on what you like to dance to, if you enjoy dancing, down the line you can do West Coast Swing, which can be danced pretty much to anything (including RnB, Soul, Alternative Rock, Cha-cha etc), but that's level 4 dance, so here better start with East Coast or Melange. AAM is usually the most expensive and least flexible. There are a couple of FADS studios in Scottsdale, and others fairly close. The Yellow Pages, http://www.ballroomdancers.com , and http://www.accessdance.com also will have studio locators for independents.

AThe quality of instruction rests entirely with the individual studio. Also, both are franchised, so there's a certain amount of flexibility in their operation. The big difference is in packaging. AM is famous for selling pakages that are inflexible and may waste a lot of your money (though as I said, this also varies from one studio to another), where independent studios tend to be the most efficient use of your money, with FADS usually falling somewhere in between, but closer to the independents' pricing policies.

AHey,I am an independent dance instructor in Boston Area, MAI have worked at a studio before, but never for an Arthur Murray.....But I do have some friends who used to teach for Arthur Murray studios so I am familiar with their system..... So I may be able to help. Basically from what I know you get about $15-$25/lesson base depending on your experience + some 1.5%-2.5% commission of sales. These are rough estimates.And so it will depend on how much you will teach, like some people teach 60 lessons a week... so they can make good money (I personally don't have the energy for that many).... but if you want to teach only 30-40, then you won't make as much.I know some teachers who have been there for a very long time and they make pretty good salaries.
