ACreated by Canadian Lorne Michaels over three decades ago, Saturday Night Live (SNL) premiered on October 11, 1975, from Studio 8H in New York City's Rockefeller Center, as NBC's Saturday Night (the name was changed to its current title 2 years later in 1977), and is in its 32nd consecutive season--one of the longest-running variety shows in the history of television.Originally nicknamed the ''Not Ready for Primetime Players,'' the first cast was comprised of Dan Aykroyd, John Belushi, Jane Curtain, Chevy Chase, Garrett Morris, Laraine Newman, and Gilda Radner. They ignited a comedy revolution with their mix of irreverent characters and satirical impressions of political figures and pop culture icons, and launched themselves into instant stardom.Some fans of the show believe the last 'good' cast played about ten years ago when the writing and performing had bite and substance. That cast consisted of Phil Hartman, Chris Farley, David Spade, Victoria Jackson, Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, Jan Hooks, Adam Sandler and Tim Meadows. This is always a subjective opinion, though, and it's generally agreed that the most 'dangerous' performing and writing was done by the original cast.
