Abstract

A fluid management system provided on a housing of an electrical device includes a shelf that covers over electrical connections projecting from the housing and includes an annular flange and an annular diverging portion of the housing exterior surface that direct liquid by gravitation away from the electrical connectors projecting from the housing and away from the vent openings of the housing.

Claim

What is claimed is: 1. A housing of an electrical device that is designed to direct liquid by gravitation over an exterior surface of the housing, the housing comprising: a top wall having an exterior surface with an outer peripheral edge and a center shaft hole, the shaft hole having a center axis that defines mutually perpendicular axial and radial directions relative to the housing; a bottom wall spaced axially below the top wall, the bottom wall having an exterior surface with an outer peripheral edge; a side wall extending axially between the top wall and the bottom wall and together with the top wall and the bottom wall enclosing an interior volume of the housing; at least one electrical connector projecting radially outwardly from the side wall; a shelf projecting radially outwardly from the top wall and positioned axially above the at least one electrical connector; and, the shelf having a distal edge positioned radially outwardly from the side wall and a ridge projecting axially upwardly from the shelf distal edge. 2. The housing of claim 1, further comprising: the ridge being positioned radially outwardly from the electrical connector. 3. A housing of an electrical device that is designed to direct liquid by gravitation over an exterior surface of the housing, the housing comprising: a top wall having an exterior surface with an outer peripheral edge and a center shaft hole, the shaft hole having a center axis that defines mutually perpendicular axial and radial directions relative to the housing; a bottom wall spaced axially below the top wall, the bottom wall having an exterior surface with an outer peripheral edge; a side wall extending axially between the top wall and the bottom wall and together with the top wall and the bottom wall enclosing an interior volume of the housing; at least one electrical connector projecting radially outwardly from the side wall; a shelf projecting radially outwardly from the top wall and positioned axially above the at least one electrical connector; and, the shelf having opposite top and bottom surfaces, the at least one electrical connector being positioned beneath the shelf bottom surface and a ridge projecting upwardly from the shelf top surface. 4.

Abstract

A mechanical oil filtration and oil flow re-direction system for a hydraulically actuated valve lifter. Pressurized oil is directed to the lifter through a series of controlled clearance passages prior to gaining access to the internal cavity of the lifter. Once inside the lifter, the oil is deflected off of an insert that directs the oil towards the upper end of the lifter and the push rod seat. The oil flow is then directed downwards into an oil deflector supply hole and into the internal cavity of the lifter and the chamber containing the lifter check ball and seat. In use, the system restricts particulates from the lifter, and re-directs particulates that do access the lifter to pre-determined locations within the lifter to minimize operational impairment of the lifter from particulate contamination.

Claim

What is claimed is: 1. A hydraulically actuated valve lifter, said lifter comprising: a body having a first oil flow passageway through a wall thereof and accessing a first internal cavity defined within said lifter body; a valve lifter plunger contained for reciprocal movement within said first internal cavity, said plunger including walls and having a second oil flow passageway extending through said plunger walls into a second internal cavity defined within said plunger, a constricted oil flow passageway defined between an external surface of said lifter plunger and an internal surface of said lifter body, said constricted passageway connecting between said first oil flow passageway and said second oil flow passageway, and, an oil deflector insert contained within said second internal cavity, said oil deflector including an upper portion sealingly engaged to inner surfaces of said plunger to direct oil within said plunger towards an upper end of said plunger, said upper portion further including an oil supply hole for enabling oil to pass into a lower portion of said plunger and into a lower portion of said second internal cavity. 2. A valve lifter as in claim 1, wherein said constricted oil flow passageway is sized to have a maximum dimension in the range of 0. 35-0. 45mm. 3. A valve lifter as in claim 2, wherein: said upper portion of said oil deflector has an annular shape and said oil supply holes are coincident with depressions in an upper surface of said annular shape. 4.

Abstract

The cooling of an electric motor is optimized by the housing of the motor being provided with inlet vent holes that are positioned and sized to increase a total air flow rate through the housing interior and by the interior surface of the housing being shaped to conform to the stator winding end turns of the motor to direct a flow of cooling air around a greater surface area of the winding end turns before being exhausted through outlet vent holes of the housing.

What is claimed is: 1. An apparatus with optimized cooling comprising: an electrical device having a rotating shaft with a center axis, the shaft center axis defining mutually perpendicular axial and radial directions relative to the electrical device; a housing having an interior volume containing the electrical device, the housing having a first end wall and a second end wall at axially opposite ends of the interior volume and a side wall connected between the first end wall and the second end wall and surrounding the interior volume, the first end wall having opposite interior and exterior surfaces with the interior surface opposing the interior volume of the housing, the interior surface having an annular concave surface and the exterior surface having an annular convex surface. 2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising: the first end wall having a shaft hole and the electrical device shaft passing through the shaft hole, and the annular concave surface and the annular convex surface extending around the shaft hole. 3. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising: at least one vent hole passing through the first end wall, the annular concave surface and the annular convex surface extending around the vent hole. 4.

Abstract

A C-clip retainer is provided in a groove of a piston, such as for an engine hydraulic valve lash adjuster, to allow installation and removably retain the piston in a cylinder of an associated assembly. The groove has a novel shape including an inner surface that is angled relative to a longitudinal axis of the piston to provide a larger groove diameter at a first axial end surface and a smaller diameter at an opposite second axial end surface of the groove. Upon installation, the clip is urged into the smaller diameter, allowing easier installation, but upon removal the clip is expanded by forcing it to the larger diameter, thereby increasing the retention force on the piston. The first axial end surface may also be formed with a back angle that reduces forces of the associated cylinder edge that tend to compress the retainer into the groove, thus further increasing the piston retention force.
