Best Answer : by Camille (C²) at 04 August 2010 07:08:19See the 2 Answers more for this question Can I be a Dualist and an Atheist?Philosophy at 13 December 2009 05:12:49 QAt a certain level of complexity, a material thing (the brain) ignites into a fiery chemical-electrical state known as consciousness. This is not simply a change in quantity; although a certain quantity of brain matter is necessary but not sufficient, but, once ignited, consciousness is a new quality in the universe. There are, of course, degrees of consciousness and it is not limited to the human species. This dualism allows human consciousness to escape certain epistemic problems and has more evidence for its existence than a theory of multiverses. Once accepted, I can easily see that anyone who is conscious will have properties appropriate to the concept of a mind. I can also see accept that there are conscious minds adapted to different environments; whales, dolphins, dogs, cats, etc. There is no boundary which would cleanly demark a brain that is capable of igniting into consciousness and, perhaps, the fire can be ignited in other ways as well. It will be interesting to see what potential AI holds as our technology increases. I do not believe that the fire of consciousness is possible without a supporting material, so some philosophers might lump me into the monist category. This would be a mistake because I am saying that the brain is not simply a meat computer but a necessary element of a different form of being. A thought is not identical to a sequence of firing neurons; the firing neurons are necessary for the thought as wax is necessary to sustain a candle's flame. Like the flame, consciousness arises when the brain or other information storage/retrieval becomes capable of distinguishing judgments about its surroundings such that those judgments become capable of being false. Once a judgment is seen to be false, the consciousness is able to adjust its judgment in the direction of being less untrue. One measure of this trait would be the ability to predict consequences more and more accurately. The judgment is said to be true when the predictions and the consequences are tuned to a defined standard. Truth then becomes coherent in a social system that allows human beings to support and value one another and to extend the limits of that coherent system. AThat works for me. I don't see any reason that a dualist has to be a theist and I think your argument has at least enough of a shred of scientific credibility to support something along the lines of a 'tangible' versus 'intangible' dualism without reliance on a deity but I am of course biased by sympathy for anything that supports a moral theory.

I have a mysql table called quotes where I'm storing articles and article information. There are 5 fields:Title varchar(255)Link varchar(255)Quote textAbstract textFullText mediumtextI am unable to retrieve any of the FullText. If I use the following code...$query = "SELECT Title, FullText FROM $usertable LIMIT 2";$result = mysql_query($query);while($row = mysql_fetch_array($result)){$FullText = $row["FullText"];$Title = $row["Title"];echo "$Title $FullText ";}...I get this error: Warning: mysql_fetch_array(): supplied argument is not a valid MySQL result resource in /home/content/b/i/o/bioshieldusa/html/site/paramTest.php on line 63.(Line 63 is the while statement)However, if I replace FullText with Quote or Abstract, everything works and displays just fine. Do I need to use a special method to extract mediumtext from the DB?? AThe word FULLTEXT is a reserved word in MySQL, which is causing problems with your query. You will need to rename this field in order to make your queries work. I once used a field named DESC, it took me ages to figure this out. For a list of reserved words, see this page:http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/reserved-words.html

Best Answer : by Nona Me at 18 November 2009 03:11:18See the 3 Answers more for this question Why do people think that mensa tests are a valid measure of IQ?Standards & Testing at 25 October 2009 08:10:48 QMensa tests tend to measure a limited number of constructs related to IQ. They tend to measure what's referred to as "acquired knowledge" (abbreviated Gc). Even questions that relate to reasoning skills or memory skills are largely reliant on acquired knowledge. A couple of examples of this: if you are given a question about a number sequence, and which number comes next, people who have previously been exposed to this type of problem are more likely to know how to answer it. So, it's less a measure of how to reason through the problem, and more a measure of exposure. Also, in the same situation, say the question requires you to have a working understanding of exponents (finding a number in a series requires you to deduce that each number is the cube of a sequence 1, 2, 3, 4...etc.). That is supposed to measure reasoning skills. What it actually measures is how much knowledge you have in the area of mathematics since people who have a lot of familiarity with math would be able to answer it quicker, and would be more likely to get it right with less actual reasoning skill involved. Again, the question is not measuring what it's supposed to.So, we see that these types of IQ tests measure a lot of Gc, which is only one part of what makes up intelligence. They also might measure some quantitative reasoning (abbreviated Gq), which is related to a type of acquired knowledge in the area of math. Like Gc, this is something that anyone can learn with varied degrees of effort and practice. What IQ tests like the mensa test cannot measure are things that are strongly associated with intelligence, such as short-term memory (which would be measured by you having to repeat increasingly complex series of information immediately after being presented the information), long-term retrieval (which would be measured by you being taught some kind of skill and then being measured on your ability to use the newly acquired skill), reaction speed (where you would be given a very short amount of time to complete as many items of a very simple task as you could), good reasoning skills (which would involve you working with items that were unrelated to other constructs such as words or numbers), and finally auditory processing (in which you would have to listen to information and work with what you've heard in some way).Normal IQ tests don't even measure Gq, because it is so iffy whether its a measure of quantitative knowledge, working memory, or a combination of the two, and thus you can't get a reliable measure of it. Tests of achievement measure Gq, which is interesting because mensa does not allow achievement test results...ironic, really since their tests heavily rely on Gq, as well as Gc, and to some extend visual-spacial ability (Gv). They are more achievement oriented than ability oriented.Beyond all at, real IQ tests are not multiple choice, they do not give you just one score (they actually give you scores on all the different constructs they measure), and are administered and scored in a standardized manner based on the taker's age-level. Thus your scores are based on a comparison against a norm group at the taker's age level, not against all people who have taken the test.Since the mensa test is no more than an online IQ test taken with pencil and paper in the presence of a glorified babysitter whose only job is to make sure you are not cheating, and since the test doesn't even come close to measuring what it purports to measure, why do people put so much stock in it?Surely, intelligent people would recognize when an organization is just trying to make money off of them... ABecause they're pretty much as valid as any other form of measure of IQ. And nobody's yet devised a test which people don't get better at if they practice...which obviously a genuine IQ test shouldn't be affected by.I agree it's just a moneymaking scheme, though. I've always said I'd bother applying when I saw a sample question I didn't consider trivial...and I'm not a genius by any means.
Best Answer : by cathrl69 at 25 October 2009 09:10:41 Did I get hacked or what???Help Really Needed?Security at 27 February 2011 01:02:11 QOk so I was playing Maplestory, an online game, and I wanted to go to another character in the game then the one I was already logged into, so I went to menu and said"quit game". Normally it would take me to character selection but it just quit the whole Maplestory window, it logged me off from the Maplestory website(it always does log off after u quit the game anyway). I tried to log back in and it said "wrong password or non-existing passport ID, please try again."They both were right but I tried again and again it kept saying it.So i restarted my computer... still didn't work.So i clicked "forgot ur account password?" i typed in nx passport ID and birthday and clicked enter, normally it would send it to your email u used to create acount, but it said "you have exceeded the daily limit for passwrod retrieval" ... i hadnt tried changing it since last week! So I went into "forgot your account?" i did everything and it WAS the right account... so thats not the problem...Recently i've been doing prizerebel offers and for this one insurance offer i typed real address, phone, car info(but not plate number) BUT DIDNT type credit card number BUT i''ve have bought stuff on the computer with credit card. Also I've never given my mapelstory info to anyone...just for that matter. On prizerebel offers when it tells me to sign up for the offer or something, i always put the same account and password for every sign up as my maplestory account.my pin is kind of east to figure out too.... also for some offers u have to download their content and install so i did like 6 of those, but the next day i deleted all of em... and norton said 134 tracking cookies are on my computer after i did offers, i didnt cancel them until the next day..I dun know many hackers that WOULD be intrested in maplestory anyway but... what im really scared of is they could figure out credit card info that i've used to buy something and fraud me.... what should i doand also that one insurance offer send me an email saying my premium is 954/month does that mean it activated insurance or what!? im also 13 so im not really good with computers... or that kind of stuff and sorry for my bad grammer but i had alot of things to say and prefection didn't matter... SO dont really take this as a maplestory question despite the title, but if u do know if it was just an errror in the game because of lag, and it still thought i was logged in or something, and i just have to wait till a server check(game restarts for updates and also, as i've seen online "to log off glitched users..." hmm that might be my problem... Anyways plz answer this but dun give me information if u dun even know ur saying cuz. I need people who have had a similar experience or might know what has happened... also should i restore my computer to factory condition if that would even do anything... Plz helpi use roboform, a program u fill forms after u put ur information in it, and theres when putting information in it, it asked me favorite account and password, i put the ones i always use as i've said b4. but i believe its safe but maybe another program went in it and got the info AWell....you haven't exactly made it hard for other people to get information on you. So maybe. It sound really fishy though...
