AWhen I was living in France I had a carte 12-25 (youth card) from the SNCF since I made trips across France during the holidays. I think this pass is a good option because it's valid for a full year and you can use it as much as you want in that period of time (summer for you). You aren't going to want to take the train that much in a couple concentrated days as riding the train takes up a good junk of your day and zaps your energy. I think once you use up the days from the raileurope pass it will be more of a pain to travel whereas each trip is cheaper and therefore you may to travel more with the carte 12-25.your best bet though if you want to be sure you're making the right economical decision is to write out the exact trips you want to do and then what trips are optional and do a cost benefit analysis of each :-)

AIf I was you , I would buy it in France, it doesn' t take too much time, maybe 5 minutes. Just go to any train station or SNCF shops in Paris , show an ID and a picture of yourself.But If you really want to get this card from Australia just tell me I will give you my e mail adress and ask the train station next to my home.About the web site unfortunately you are right you can not order a card from australia and it is weird.

AI usually have my name on my SNCF ticket because I use a "frequent flyer" card. If you don't use a specific fare linked to your identity (eg : age, student...), in the train they won't ask for your identity, although I can't be specific about an Elipsos train having never taken it. It's within the EU so there shouldn't be any difference. You could ask your french friend to go to a SNCF counter in a station and ask toi change it to your nae, if there's a name on it...

ARailroads have been running high-speed for a long time, they've got it figured out. You're right, at those speeds, "stop look and listen" won't give adequate warning. So, no one is ever allowed to cross those tracks. There are bridges or underpasses for the cars and pedestrians. They are well fenced so they don't have trespassers trying to cross the tracks.But even on regular tracks, busy crossings have "crossing flashers" which give 20 seconds of advance warning that a train is coming. Anywhere else, the person crossing the tracks must stop, look and listen.
