20 civil engineering?Engineering at 19 October 2007 01:10:36 QI want to take up civil engineering or architecture in college. Civil engineering seems to be a man's work. Do you guys think that a girl would be successful in that field? Or is it such a competitive profession that women who are civil engineers will be discriminated by other male civil engineers? Same for being an architect.Since you work in that field...could you kindly explain to me what are the required skills to be an engineer? ACivil engineering classically was a man's field up until recently. If you look at the graduation rates of Civil Engineer's in the last 5-10 years, you'll see a big rise in the number of women. I have been working in the field for about 8 years and have worked at companies with no women engineers and companies that have almost a 50/50 ratio of men/women engineers in some design groups. Since Civil Engineering has such a broad range of age groups, you'll see more men in our current decade, but the number of women will start increasing from now on due to demand for engineers, higher base pay for a bachelor's level degree, quantity of work available, etc. There may be a local chapter of the Women's Engineer's Society near you that could also provide you with more in depth information. Good luck and I hope you found this helpful!

My father is a civil engineer and says I have the capability to become one too.I have a few questions1)Is Civil Engineering a good job?2) Do Civil Engineers earn a lot? How much on average?3) Is an American Civil Engineering Degree valid in Australia? Thanks. Agreat job. pay depends if you go in private or government. pay is more in private, but benefits in the public sector leave private industries in the dust. project managers in america average over 100K (US Dollars). You start low (around 50-55K), but you can move up the ladder easily depending on following factors:never ending determination to learnpeople skillsMy dad was a civil engineer in the public sector and his retirement package is 100K every year for the rest of his life with guarunteed cost of living increases every year!
Best Answer : by utoots at 24 May 2008 04:05:51See the 1 Answers more for this question Civil engineering....?Engineering at 14 October 2007 08:10:33 Qwhat does civil/structural engineering degree involves? what kind of jobs does it lead to?i am considering doing a civil or structural engineering degree and have a wide idea of what it is but i would like to see what people who have done it think and what they had to do and did they enjoy it..please help...it always improtant to hear what people think of it instead on univesity prospectus. AA civil engineering degree involves lots of studies in calculus, physics, trig, statics, strengths of materials, etc. The job opportunities are wide-ranging. Design of buildings, highways, bridges, water/sewer systems; management of heavy construction; research, design and consulting in pavements, materials, geotechnical - many choices. I enjoy it because it typically involves projects that benefit the public, and the projects are large scale.
Best Answer : by Rick B at 14 October 2007 11:10:02 How do people with civil engineering degree obtain a mechanical engineer position?Engineering at 03 June 2011 07:06:25 QI noticed that many civil engineers do not always work in their field of studies. Some civil engineers work as mechanical engineer. After getting a civil engineering degree, what do you need to do to become a mechanical engineer or work in other field of engineering? ABuild your resume with mechanical engineering experience/training or go back to school and get the degree. It is also helpful to gain experience in mechanical engineering software such as Solid Works. If you are a civil engineer you have most likely taken at least a few mechanical engineer courses as well (hopefully thermodynamics and dynamics). List those on your resume and apply for a position.

Now, I read somewhere that a political science degree with a civil engineering degree would work well, but that doesn't seem to make sense to me, although I am thoroughly interested in political science.Do you have any suggestions for what I could do? I like the political science degree with civil engineering in theory, but what kind of civil engineering could I do with that?Thank you! AMaybe you should try something in the field of energy or environment conservation or anything related to that. Going green is very popular today and jobs in that field are good. Think about civil engineering and things like oil, renewable resources, the ozone, disaster preparation...
Best Answer : by at 26 November 2011 02:11:55See the 1 Answers more for this question What is civil engineering and what is urban planning?Higher Education (University +) at 14 November 2009 02:11:14 QI'm looking at what I want to major in at college (I'm a sophomore in high school), and what I want to pursue for a career. I ran across a profession called civil engineering, and another one called urban planning. What do civil engineers and urban planners do? What are the differences between the two?By the way, I read about those professions through an article about lucrative jobs in the environmental or "green" field. ACivil engineers work on the details of building projects (could be buildings, bridges, or something else)...how many columns will it need, how far apart should they be, what type of concrete should be used, what would happen to it in the event of an earthquake, etc. Urban planners work on creating and evaluating more general plans for how cities should look and function...they might develop ideas like making a certain street pedestrian-only or banning buildings over four stories high in a certain neighborhood.
Best Answer : by Amanda at 14 November 2009 05:11:56See the 1 Answers more for this question What is the difference between architectural engineering and civil engineering?Higher Education (University +) at 09 February 2012 02:02:08 QOriginally i wanted to major in civil engineering or architecture but i found this thing called architectural engineering. From what i can find on the internet architectural and civil engineering appear to be the same thing except that civil engineers can specialize in different things and are usually paid more. Anyone know? AIf you like math and mechanics and a bit of drawing then you go with civilIf you ready to keep drawing for a whole 12 hours and then get all of that drawing refused and sit another 16 hours to redo it then go with architectureBoth fields have a common issues but there are things are determined in each of them for example :steel buildings , irrigation , bridges and the design of the structure system of the building that's designing every single thing about the building and the electrical and water cycling ending with the interior design that's architectureBelieve me it's more about what you like and what you are ready to give more in the chosen filed .And by the way civil aren't always get paid better ;)
Best Answer : by TOFI at 11 February 2012 02:02:03 Is the University of Houston a good civil engineering school?Engineering at 13 September 2011 06:09:46 QI'm a sophomore in high school and I've recently been interesting in civil engineering as a career. I live in the Houston area and civil engineering is an option for a degree at the University of Houston. Does anybody know if the civil engineering program in U of H is any good? Are there any other suggestions for schools for civil engineering? Also, which classes in high school should I take to be prepared for the degree? Thank You! AIt is certainly good enough. People always get wrapped up in the idea that you have to go to a "good" school to do well. The fact is, if the school is accredited you will get all of the basics necessary to do well as an engineer. In the long run it is the ability of the individual that determines how well they do. My son has a degree in mechanical engineering from UH and has done very well. He works for a Fortune 500 company and is ranked in the top few percent of their engineers.
Best Answer : by oil field trash at 13 September 2011 02:09:55 What is the difference between Architectural Engineering and Civil/Structural Engineering?Engineering at 14 March 2012 09:03:09 QI am very interested (career-wise) in the areas of construction, design, and engineering, which is why I've decided to look into both of these fields. Can someone please explain to me what the difference is between Architectural Engineering and Civil Engineering (preferably the Structural branch of CE). In which of these two fields do people have better/more secure jobs? ACivil/Structural Engineering is much more in demand than Architectural. Civil Structural engrs are not limited to the Architectural field, which is not as stable to begin with. Most successful Architectural Engineers are Civil/Structural types anyway, and it used to be,,,,many years ago, that you could not study Architectural Eangineering unless you had a degree as a Civil/Structural Engineer first. You had to do your Architectural studies as a Masters program.
Best Answer : by gatorbait at 15 March 2012 01:03:39See the 1 Answers more for this question What's the difference between Engineering and Civil Engineering?Engineering at 17 October 2010 12:10:47 QI want to know how many years it takes to complete a degree in each field and how the curriculum compares. I'm looking at Engineering and Water Resources Civil Engineering. Information will be greatly appreciated. AEngineering covers an overly broad field ranging from the Sanitary engineer who sweeps up the streets to Structural Engineers like Gustav Eifel who design incredibly complex structures and bridges. In between you will find: Chemical, Corrosion, Safety, Mining, Electrical, Mechanical, Software, and a host of other 'Engineers'/I think what you are focusing on, however is the fields of Professional Engineering . These are like Doctors or Lawyers and require a form of State licence to present yourself as one for hire. Civil Engineers have many subclasses (Drainage, Traffic, etc..) while a Structural Engineer is lke a PhD of engineering.Electrial and Mechanical Engineers are completely different professions but united to Civil in their basic roots of math and science.Typically, you will spend 5 to 6 years to get a solid engineering degree PLUS you will spend at least two to five years getting your professional credential depending upon when you start working on it (you can do that while you are still in college).Generally, around the second year of your degree, you will need to decide what type of engineer you want to be and your cirriculum will then be focused around that..
