Why does everybody think only Asians are better at math?
Surely because she’s Asian – that’s what many people would say. Perhaps it could be also that she is more used to focusing, and therefore is able to recall the mathematical principles that all the 8th graders had learned in past years, (to be forgotten quickly and decisively), and put them all together and applied properly. Best Answer : by the mathemagician at 21 December 2009 03:12:23See the 5 Answers more for this question Job prospects for computer science and math?Higher Education (University +) at 04 July 2008 01:07:55 QI'm dual majoring in computer science and (pure) mathematics right now. I'm loving it and plan to get a graduate degree in math, but I'm somewhat worried about the job prospects outside of college.Basically I have two separate paths I could follow:1) Work as a programmer, probably for a company where some mathematical work will be needed. I'm confident in my programming skills, I have many years of self-taught experience, and I enjoy it.2) If I were to get a Ph.D. in mathematics, I could work as a professor or a hired mathematician. How good are my real-world job prospects if, say, I get a B.S. in computer science and a Masters in mathematics (instead of a Ph.D.)? Will I generally be able to get a higher-paying, better programming job with than someone with just a computer science degree? And how are the jobs for just pure mathematicians or professors? This isn't about just money but also the quality of the work environment.Thank you very much for your input.I should say that I really do have a strong passion for both programming and mathematics. For many years, any alone time I had was often spent either doing programming for fun or reading up on some math. This is a difficult decision, for sure!An actuary is an interesting idea. I'd never really considered it until now. I'm afraid the computer science education may become a bit of a waste if I went that route, though. It's definitely something I'll look into. AIt's likely that a masters degree in mathematics would help your job prospects (it certainly wouldn't hurt). You might be able to find more interesting job opportunities with a graduate degree. The job market for faculty positions is quite difficult. Even faculty positions at not so great schools receive hundreds of applications for each opening. The pay is generally pretty good at top research universities and top liberal arts colleges, but it can be quite poor at some other schools. Average faculty salaries can be found at:http://chronicle.com/stats/aaup/Academia is rather status-conscious, so if you do a PhD in mathematics, you'll have better odds of getting an OK job if you go to a school that is highly ranked as a department and/or in your specialty. You might also consider programs in operations research or statistics. They're both in high demand in industry, so a PhD program in either would give you options in both academia and industry. A lot of universities are having trouble hiring statistics professors right now because they can make so much more money in industry.
Best Answer : by Mathematician at 05 July 2008 07:07:34See the 1 Answers more for this questionSee the 2 Comments more for this question Should i minor in Computer Science?Higher Education (University +) at 19 October 2010 09:10:56 QI'm currently getting my BS in Pure Mathematics and was wondering if i should minor in Computer science? Will this help me finding a job? Is a computer science minor helpful? I'm willing to stay in school for another year if this minor will help me in the near future.I have little experience in programming. I can't decided if i should enrolled in the teaching credential program or minor in CS. I'm worried becoming a teacher i will not have a high salary and if i decided on CS minor it will not benefit finding a job. ADo you have any experience in programming?Sure, it may help you better find a job, but I'd take an intro course first and see what you think. I'm a 3rd year CS student and I know a TON of people who have dropped out of the program because of its difficulty. The best bet imo would be to ask a counsellor or whatnot and review your options for the future.EDIT: Referring to why I think it may help you in the future: if you decide to work with finances for example, seeing the words "Minor in CS" helps because they assume you know how to use Excel and stuff. Weird, but true!

Best Answer : by Alejandro at 03 June 2010 12:06:36 Will freshman bad grades hurt me for grad school?Higher Education (University +) at 14 September 2010 08:09:28 QI am now a Senior and have earned all A's for three years straight and now have a 3.68 GPA with a double major in Pure Mathematics and Computer Science. I was wondering whether or not I would not be able to get into a good grad program due to taking one semester of courses at a community college and getting 4 F's. after that I changed everything and got A's and transferred to a major University. What do you think? AYou should be fine. Your later classes are a lot more important than your freshman ones.A lot of students have trouble adjusting to college and their grades take a hit. The fact you managed to straighten yourself out and go from Fs to As is pretty impressive. It shows you can face adversity and failure yet still work towards a goal. Most grad programs require an interview. Expect this to come up during that, and explain what happened and how you turned it around.
Best Answer : by PoohBearPenguin at 14 September 2010 08:09:23 Applied Math vs. Mathematical Sciences (Pure Math)?Mathematics at 20 November 2008 03:11:32 QI'm currently an undergrad about to complete my B.S. in Computer Science. I want to go to grad school for math and most of the schools I'm looking at have two different math programs: Applied and Mathematical Sciences (what I'm guessing is more like pure mathematics). I look at the differences in courses between these two programs and the pure mathematics track appeals to me more but I would rather take what is more applicable to my computer science degree and future career as a programmer. Can anyone suggest which track is better for a Computer science guy? What are the main differences? Thanks! AStart out by finding a professor in the Department of Computer Science that you can talk with about your interests in graduate study in Mathematics. He may have good suggestions. Then find a professor in the Department of Mathematics that you can develop a friendship with and who has an interest in developing algorithms (like creating software) and/or applying recursion theory. Let that second professor assist you. If your focus is on learning more and going into some research, appropriate classes in pure mathematics may be better. If your focus is only on your career, applied mathematics with selective classes in logic and combinatorics will likely be better. Try to take classes good in both areas during your first semester. Some students start in one area and move to the other side after one semester.
Best Answer : by JJWJ at 20 November 2008 08:11:55 Why math and does it really describe (which i believe it does) pretty much everything that exists?Mathematics at 11 February 2009 10:02:40 QI understand how important mathematics is to everything. to me, it is the most important form of pure science that exists. i recently switched from a computer science major (where i got bored) to a pure mathematics major, which i enjoy. Is there really room for more math majors, and does it really answer all the questions i hope it does? AIf you've got a liking for maths, you'll do well.Best wishes from Australia.
Best Answer : by hobart_elf at 11 February 2009 10:02:38See the 4 Answers more for this question Bachelors in Mathematics a good idea?Mathematics at 31 May 2009 05:05:53 QI'm planning to opt for a BMath degree in University of Waterloo Majoring in Pure Mathematics and Minoring in Computer Science. Will my job prospects be good? The thing is even if i'm taking pure maths, i dont want to hamper my chances of being a statistician when i grown up. If i do bachelors in pure maths and a masters in statistics, can i still opt for a job which requires a 'statistician'? What I mean to say does a job having the name 'statistician' necessarily require a bachelor of statistics degree or is masters adequate? AI'm not a mathematician (I'm a chemist), but if we were hiring a PhD chemist in our chemistry department and s/he had an undergraduate degree in a related field like physics or biology, their job prospects would not be hampered at all by that. We would be focussed on how much chemistry they knew and what they planned to do with that knowledge. I strongly suspect that it is the same in Math and Statistics.

Others that are hopless and you learn nothing from because of the erratic nature in which they conduct the class, lesson method all over the place without any structure etc.All of the subjects you listed will contain theory worked out two hundred or more years ago. The subject will take care of itself. It's more of a battle between you and the lecturer rather than you and the subject.

Computers are mainframes, time and resources are precious, and programs are primitive at best. A group of students led by their professor decide to model a two dimensional world--with the deptyh and horizontal axis rather than the horizontal and vertical axes of Flatland. It starts as an exercise in pure physics, mathematics and computer science, until their model somehow connects to a real two-dimensional world, and an inhabitant, YNDRD, who can hear them in his mind. And with YNDRD...
