Best Answer : by Aeon at 18 March 2008 06:03:53 Liberal arts??Higher Education (University +) at 29 April 2008 06:04:41 QWhat is "liberal arts education"? And how it is differ from the regular education? AThere is a difference between "the Liberal Arts" and a Liberal Arts education and a major in Liberal Arts. Every degree at every level will require some liberal arts study. We often call this 'the core' or 'general education requirement'. Some degrees are very heavily founded in those courses though and are called "liberal arts degrees".A liberal arts education is intended to prepare you to think and reason - to understand the "why" of the world around you.A vocational or professional education is intended to prepare you to perform a task (or series of tasks) and to understand the "how" of an occupational field or area of study. Most degrees combine portions of each but some have more of one or the other. There is no "regular" education as such. Some examples to maybe make it clear:* Majoring in history would be a liberal arts education. You learn all about "what happened and why" of history. Majoring in history education (to be a teacher) is a professional course of study. You learn "how" to teach people about history.* Majoring in economics (as a social science) would be a liberal arts education. You learn all about "why" economies work the way they do. Majoring in managerial economics would be a professional course of study. You learn all about "how" to use economic theories to increase profits or minimize losses.* Majoring in biology is a liberal arts education. You learn about the physical "why" of life. Majoring in Bio-informatics is professional - you learn "how" to manage biologically related data collections.Neither is "better" then the other in and of itself. Each has a place depending upon what you want to do in life. All professions and areas of study can be addressed from a liberal arts perspective as well as a professional perspective. Some are better suited than others for each. If you want to be a nurse, studying the "why" of nursing isn't as useful as the "how" of nursing. On the other hand, knowing "how" to do history as a historian isn't as much help to the historian as knowing some "why and what" of history first. Some people get a degree in Liberal Arts - that's the major. I have one of those and am very glad I did it. I often refer to it as "a degree in nothing; or everything" though and it has relatively less value as an employment credential but great value in self-fulfillment. I know a lot of cool stuff about a lot of cool things because of that degree. Unless you want to be an elementary school teacher or don't need an employment credential - it's rarely the best degree path choice. The best way to look at the decision is to decide what career you want to enter. Find out what credentials that career requires. Take that path.

Best Answer : by Man at 14 August 2007 08:08:26See the 2 Answers more for this question What Liberal arts course should i take in Community to become a lawyer?Higher Education (University +) at 08 April 2011 03:04:28 QI'm planning to go to ccp for two years and transferring, but i need to know which courses i should take to become an attorney. I have the options of Liberal arts - Humanities, Liberal arts - general, Liberal arts - rel studies, Liberal arts - social/behavior science, or Justice. Which would be best? Athere are no required courses to get into law school, unlike med school or some other professional degree programs.my suggestion is take what courses interest you the most as you are prone to do better in those types of subjects.in the end, your senior year of your undergraduate work, when you start applying to law schools.... admission decisions will be based primarily off of two numbers: your undergrad GPA and your LSAT score (law school admission test). above a 170 on your lsat and above 3.50 and you will have an awesome shot at most schools. 150 lsat and 3.0 gpa and your chance are drastically reduced, but it is still possible to find a decent school. below 150 and below 3.0 and your chances of going to law school are very limited.this said, understand the importance of your GPA. take classes that you find to be interesting, not because some one suggests or tells you to take x,y, and z, (ironic i know)something to consider - empirical studies suggest that students with a background in philosophy which includes logic perform better on the lsat than non-philosophy students. if you don';t go that route, i would still suggest a course in logic before your lsat as the lsat is roughly 75% logical reasoning. good luck!
Best Answer : by jace at 08 April 2011 03:04:44See the 3 Answers more for this question What private, liberal arts colleges have an exceptional arts program?Higher Education (University +) at 28 January 2009 10:01:18 QI'm majoring in Studio Arts and possibly French or International Relations. My current school is strong in the liberal arts but their visual arts program is underdeveloped and pretty elementary, so I want to transfer.I feel like I rarely hear about good arts programs at small, private colleges so I'm looking for some suggestions, primarily in the Pacific Northwest but I'm open to anything.Thanks. AThe small, liberal arts schools that I know have excellent overall academics and strong visual arts programs are on the east coast, sorry. They include: Bard, Skidmore, Tufts (via their relationship with the School of the MFA Boston), Brown (via their relationship with RISD; and like Tufts, maybe big for you, but they really are small unis, relatively speaking), and Carnegie Mellon U (again, a small uni). Those are all very strong. The one I think is dead-on for what you want is Bard. Others you could consider include Smith, Hampshire, Wesleyan, and SUNY New Palz.

Best Answer : by ownpool at 06 December 2009 08:12:34 How do liberal arts colleges compare with regular colleges?Higher Education (University +) at 05 April 2009 06:04:39 QWould going to a liberal arts college make it difficult to get a job that would be easier to get if I had gone to a regular college in America?Do liberal arts schools have better education in humanities? How do I decide if I should go to a liberal arts college? AI'm not sure what you mean. Most colleges in the US offer liberal arts degrees (That is a Bachelor of Arts) A in one of the liberal arts - history, languages, literature, the arts etc.) and a BS (Bachelor of Science) if you major in one of the sciences. Some award only BAs no matter what you major in. So I'm not sure what you mean by a "regular" college. You can (or at least you used to be able to) do a "liberal arts" degree at MIT! There are colleges that are stronger in certain areas of the humanities or sciences. I would think that the reputation of the college in your field would matter most.Could you be more specific about your concerns? Are there specific colleges that you are wondering about? What do you think that you might major in? What do you mean by "regular" vs "liberal arts"Would love to help - but that's all I can do with what you've given us.
Best Answer : by barbara c at 05 April 2009 06:04:48See the 1 Answers more for this question How is a liberal arts college like Harvey Mudd superior to top ranked public university?Higher Education (University +) at 14 September 2010 05:09:13 QFirstly, The SAT score requirements for Harvey Mudd are much more than those of universities like UC Berkeley, Georgia Tech, UVA and University of Illinois. Secondly, the acceptance rates of Harvey Mudd are much lower than those of the other universities. Also, Harvey Mudd doesn't have any research facilities like the other universities have, still it is difficult to get into a Liberal Arts College like Harvey Mudd than to get into a top ranked public university. Why is it so? Why do liberal arts colleges have so high requirements even though they have low rankings? AFirst, Harvey Mudd isn't truly a broad LAC. It's a science and engineering speciality school, which makes it a bit different. It's a lot smaller than the other colleges you mentioned, and that can impact acceptance rates. And when you look at UC Berkeley, etc., make sure you're looking at their admissions rates, SATs and etc. specifically for engineering, math and science, not for the uni as a whole, when you're comparing them with Harvey Mudd. Otherwise, you're not comparing apples to apples. Remember, the SAT scores needed to get into, say, U Illinois Urbana engineering will likely be higher than those to get into UI Urbana art or English - especially the math scores. So be sure you're comparing the scores just for engineering, science and math to those of Harvey Mudd. That'll give you a clearer picture. Finally, I don't understand why you're saying that Harvey Mudd is low ranking. It's far from low ranking. It's one of the best ranked undergraduate engineering schools in the US.
Best Answer : by RoaringMice at 14 September 2010 05:09:54 What is the difference between liberal studies and liberal arts?Teaching at 19 October 2011 01:10:48 QI want to study to become an elementary school teacher, and i was wondering would it be better to study in liberal arts or liberal studies, or if they're the same thing. I'm not really sure. Also, is that the best major to choose to become an elementary school teacher? Or can you major in something different and minor in one of those. As of now, i was going to major in Liberal Studies or Liberal Arts and minor in spanish. Is that a good route to take? ALiberal arts refers to all the non-professional majors, from English to art to astrophysics. Liberal studies as a major means not picking a major, just taking a bunch of random classes. While many specific liberal arts majors are useful, liberal studies is not. If you want to be a elementary teacher, you need to major in elementary education.
