20 What kind of jobs can I get with a double major in economics and Mathematical Sciences (stat and probability)?Higher Education (University +) at 28 September 2009 09:09:56 Qmathematical sciences is a specialization in statistics probability and data gathering. I am currently doing actuarial science and economics but I am not sure if actuary is the right path for me so I am thinking of switching from actuarial science to mathematical sciences depending on if the job prospects are better. AWithout reading your post and seeing the title only at first, actuary was the first thing that came to my mind. It's in high demand right now due to this horrible economy. The starting salary (from an artice I read) was about 75,000.
Best Answer : by ej at 28 September 2009 09:09:52See the 2 Answers more for this question Can a person with a BS in Mathematical Sciences get a job in the computer industry?Other - Computers at 01 January 2009 07:01:18 QThe mathematical sciences major at my school requires the student to take Programming 1 and 2 just like the CS majors, but other than that there arent any more computer science classes. Ive been thinking about majoring in mathematical sciences because i'd either like a career in computers or i'd like to be a teacher, but I'm just wondering how exactly a math degree would lead to a computer job if it only has two computer classes.thanks eshui AYES, the most important thing for you to go into this field are a couple things: what you know is more important than the degree, meaning that if you are strong in information systems, software, hardware..etc, you can get into this field without a degree, but you would need to be certified in ms or cisco. The most important thing though beyond this is that you get your degree because the degree will always place a higher standard than those who do not or just certified.I have an BS degree in information technology and I am a banker. I found out through the processes at school that I didn't really have a passion for this field and I love working in the banking industry where I am excelling. Key note: I have so much more opportunity with my company for advancement because I have my degree versus my friends who do not have one.If you ask your friends or other people who have a degree if they are in the field that they majored in college, most of them would say no. Really only specialized professions need that specific degree such as medical, law enforcement/legal, engineering, however your degree would most likely be acceptable for engineering. If you really like computer science, find something specific within that field and be an expert, well rounded balance in the field is ok, but specialized IT consultants are always in demand.Good luck

Can also state out the advantage and disadvantage of this 2 courses?? Aboth are hard either accounting or acturial..when you take math sc, it's means that you must learn science too like biology students..if you take math, its mean that it really pure math..believe me..

It would indeed be part of the math department. As far as preparing you for the exams, that's up to you. It's going to take a LOT of studying either way. Many people have to take the tests several times.

Best Answer : by Love Guru at 17 November 2009 03:11:15 How important is mathematical intuition in physics and other sciences?Physics at 23 April 2009 03:04:43 QI just feel like I don't have that math "sense" that some people do, and I don't just get math like some of the really smart people in my school. However, I work really hard and I got top grades in Calculus AB and BC. In classes like AP Physics C, I can also get top grades but I had to work really hard also. I'm goin to UC Berkeley and I'm just worried that not having that math intuition will destroy me in universities and beyond. Please share some insights! Thanks! AProbably the single greatest paper I have ever read on the difference between US high school maths and professional mathematics is called "A Mathematician's Lament," by Paul Lockhart. You can read a copy here if you're so inclined:http://www.maa.org/devlin/LockhartsLament.pdfIntuitions drive mathematical thought in the common case, but in US high schools, you are often coaxed to abandon your natural intuitions about a subject in favor of explicit proofs and rigorous details. For example: you've presumably seen the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, and you've maybe even seen formal proofs of it. But the deep intuition behind the fundamental theorem of calculus is absolutely brainless: it occurs to anyone as an obvious fact of life:The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus: "Sums undo differences, and vice versa."If you can pick up on those sorts of intuitions, you're in good shape for mathematics and theoretical physics. Much of quantum mechanics is just linear algebra in funny hats: you just need to say, "oh, these vectors that went like v_i and these functions that went like f(x) were both the same thing -- there's some variable on the inside and I get some number on the outside. And dot products can be integrals etc. etc. There might even be other coordinate systems, other than the x-coordinate, in which we can express f -- just as we can express v_i in rotated coordinate systems." A senior course in transport phenomena can be generally performed by drawing boxes and saying "here's the amount of stuff going into the box in a time dt. Here's the amount leaving it. Therefore, the time rate of change of the amount inside the box is this minus that."Physical intuitions are similar, but they're of a different character. Suppose I ask you, "air is full of these molecules bouncing around -- presumably they hit each other every once in a while, yes? How far does a molecule go before it hits another one?"That's a physical question, and it has an elegant answer. "Well, it's got to be less than one millimeter," I say, "because sound is a phenomenon where molecules bump into each other, and sound passes through my ear, which -- I've seen Q-tips -- must be in the millimeter range or so. If the air were colliding into the walls of my ear much more than into other molecules, the pressure wave would probably have real trouble navigating my ear then."If you can have these sorts of insights on a topic -- any topic -- then that topic is where you should invest your academic interest. It doesn't matter so much how good you are with moving symbols and equations around, and intuiting just what your teacher wants or doesn't want you to do with the formulas in the textbook.
Best Answer : by Drostie at 23 April 2009 03:04:00See the 2 Answers more for this question Applied Math vs. Mathematical Sciences (Pure Math)?Mathematics at 20 November 2008 03:11:32 QI'm currently an undergrad about to complete my B.S. in Computer Science. I want to go to grad school for math and most of the schools I'm looking at have two different math programs: Applied and Mathematical Sciences (what I'm guessing is more like pure mathematics). I look at the differences in courses between these two programs and the pure mathematics track appeals to me more but I would rather take what is more applicable to my computer science degree and future career as a programmer. Can anyone suggest which track is better for a Computer science guy? What are the main differences? Thanks! AStart out by finding a professor in the Department of Computer Science that you can talk with about your interests in graduate study in Mathematics. He may have good suggestions. Then find a professor in the Department of Mathematics that you can develop a friendship with and who has an interest in developing algorithms (like creating software) and/or applying recursion theory. Let that second professor assist you. If your focus is on learning more and going into some research, appropriate classes in pure mathematics may be better. If your focus is only on your career, applied mathematics with selective classes in logic and combinatorics will likely be better. Try to take classes good in both areas during your first semester. Some students start in one area and move to the other side after one semester.
