AIt is not so much underselling yourself as putting a question in the mind of a potential employer who is going to look at your cv and wonder why someone of 12 years experience is going for a junior designer position – will they be happy to work for a reduced wage, will they accept working with “senior” designers who have less experience then they, will they disrupt the balance of a team.I don’t want to put you off, I know how difficult it is at the moment, just suggesting some hurdles you might have to explain in your application and interview.

AYou'll need an egineering degree, typically Mechanical, Aeronautical, or Electrical. I also recommend, the world being what it is, learning Chinese or Hindi as manufacturing is being priced out of this country. Don't worry too much about which college you get your degree from, as long as it's accredited. If may also help if you go on for an M.S. or even a PhD, but that's not totally necessary. Besides your core classes I always like to recomment something to boost your personal finance knowledge.
